Everything You Need to Know About Transit Upholstery

Everything You Need to Know About Transit Upholstery

Working with transit upholstery requires a lot of skill and knowledge, not to mention great materials. After all, durability and abrasion resistance due to high everyday usage is so crucial in this department.

If you want to learn more about what working with transit upholstery entails, keep reading!

Transit Seating Materials

When it comes to transit upholstery, it all starts with the right fabric. Since people will get in and out of the mass transit vehicle repeatedly, the materials you use need to be able take thousands of rubs a day. Apart from durability and abrasion resistance, the fabrics you choose for transit should also be easy to clean, stain/ soil/ flame resistant, plus moisture repellent with colorfastness and antimicrobial and antibacterial properties. It’s also worth mentioning that any materials being exposed to UV light for hours on end will also suffer if they’re not resistant enough.

What material would we recommend? In our opinion, vinyl meets all of the above requirements being so durable, comfortable and easy to maintain.

Design

Let’s be honest here. The good looks often get neglected in commercial transit upholstery because what matters most is uniformity. Another contributing factor is budget. However, there are companies who like to invest in the look they want, and they care more about specific colors, materials and logo placement.

Fun fact: Do you know why some transit materials feature a lot of busy patterns? Because it’s easier to hide stains that way!

Transit Upholstery

Doing upholstering for mass transit vehicles requires a lot of knowledge about the industry standards, let alone a professional skill set.  According to this article, “you need to be able to balance aesthetics, both in color and design, with durability and robustness that are beyond normal furniture or upholstery norms.” Another important thing to take into consideration is the expected life span of mass transit seating. The seats you’re upholstering should be able to last up to 12 years, although realistically the fabrics are usually being replaced within 5 to 10 years.

Pros and Cons of Using Vinyl in Medical Upholstery

December 19, 2017 by Paulina

Pros and Cons of Using Vinyl in Medical Upholstery
Working in Medical Upholstery for over two decades, we often get asked what are the best materials to use for the furniture at a healthcare establishment. Since there’s usually many things that we take into consideration for each job, we decided to break it down and share the pros and cons of using one of the most popular upholstery materials – vinyl.

Advantages of Using Vinyl in Medical Upholstery:

  1. Cost-effective – One of the most affordable upholstery materials.
  2. Easy to Clean – Any spills can be easily cleaned with a simple soap and water solution.
  3. Long-lasting – Maintained properly (away from the heat), vinyl remains a strong and stain-resistant surface.
  4. Sanitary surface – Many vinyl materials are designed to prevent growth for potentially harmful mold and bacteria.

Disadvantages of Using Vinyl in Medical Upholstery:

  1. Not attractive – Vinyl is considered to give an institutional feel rather than comfort.
  2. Chemical emission – Vinyl materials that are based on traditional PVC are considered the most toxic.
  3. Difficult to repair – Any tear will have to be patched, and there’s no way to avoid seeing the work.
  4. Poor ventilation – Vinyl is rather stiff and tends to stick to bare skin.

As you can see, there are many things to consider when choosing vinyl as your cover material for medical upholstery. Before making your final decision, we highly recommend checking out these two articles on How to Properly Select the Right Cover Materials as well as The Best Cleaning Practices you should know regarding medical upholstery.

3 Reasons Why Fall Is the Best Time to Take Care of Boat Upholstery

August 15, 2017 by Paulina

3 Reasons Why Fall Is the Best Time to Take Care of Boat UpholsteryDo you have any boat upholstery that needs to be sewn or replaced? Or, perhaps you have canvas that needs to be repaired or renewed? If you’re looking for a professional advice in this department, we say: DO IT NOW. It’s never too early to be ready for the upcoming boating season.

With over 40 years of experience in upholstery business, we know more than anything that it’s never good to put off any upholstery work. Especially, when it comes to marine equipment. In today’s post, we’d like to talk about 3 reasons why fall is the best time to take care of your boat upholstery.

3 Reasons Why Fall Is the Best Time to Take Care of Boat Upholstery

  1. Fix it before you dock it. It’s a simple and highly effective rule. Taking care of all your boat upholstery repairs before you store the boat for the winter season, will protect you from any unnecessary surprises come spring. In our opinion, it’s never too early to start gearing up for the next boating season.
  2. Off season advantages. If you bring a boat to your favorite upholstery experts in the fall (or early winter), it will not only lighten their workload in the upcoming spring, but will also give some work to people during off season. Plus, you’ll have the boat ready before spring launch! No more missed boating days waiting in line to finish your upholstery.
  3. Price. While there’s no promises in this department, it is very likely that an upholstery shop will give you a better price for your repairs during off season. It’s always smart to call in and ask for any discounts.

Needless to say, NOW is the time to get any of your marine upholstery projects underway. Who wouldn’t want to sleep better knowing that their boat is tucked away safe, shiny and new anyway?

Final notes

AVOID THE SPRING RUSH at all costs.

May 16, 2017 by admin

At Rayco Upholstery, we understand that hospitals, doctor offices, surgery centers, dental and rehabilitation centers, are usually high-paced facilities serving hundreds of patients on weekly basis. The last thing the doctors or office managers need is to worry about the medical furniture repairs. Upholstery of the tables, chairs, and equipment should be left to the experts in this industry.  That is #1 reason why you should choose Rayco Upholstery to help you elevate the stress.

WHY RAYCO UPHOLSTERY?Rayco Upholstery Medical Furniture Repairs

Most of the time the hospital tables and procedure chairs/equipment is costly, but the fabrics and vinyl that they come with tend to be an inferior product (light in weight, poor tensile strength or low double rubs). On top of it, they’re manufactured overseas to drive cost down and raise profits, leaving the consumer with a subsidiary product.

All of our hospitality and medical vinyl and cloth are far superior AND manufactured in the United States. We carry tons of colors and selections, and offer competitive prices. Our materials are antimicrobial, antibacterial, flame retardant and mildew resistant.

Our professional and courteous staff will assist you in repairing all your upholstery needs, so you can concentrate on your clients.  The estimators will come to your location, exam your situation and give you a free estimate on your requested repairs.  We offer flexible hours and prompt turnaround times, so your product is out of commission for less little time as possible.

HEALTHIER HOSPITALS INITIATIVE

We also are aware of the H.H.I. (Healthier Hospitals Initiative) and offer materials that will be free of halogenated flame retardants, formaldehyde, and per fluoridated compounds.

With over 65 years in medical furniture repairs, there probably isn’t a job we have not done!
